Waxed Canvas Jackets: The Complete Guide to RangeWax®, Care & Rewaxing

The Schaefer Guide · Waxed Canvas

By the Schaefer Outfitter team, Texas · Updated November 5, 2026 · Materials and features pulled directly from our product pages

Waxed canvas is the oldest weatherproof fabric still worth wearing. It sheds rain, laughs at mesquite thorns and gets better looking every year you abuse it. That is why our RangeWax® jackets are some of the hardest-working pieces we make.

This guide explains how waxed canvas works, which of our waxed jackets fits your weather and your work, and exactly how to clean and rewax one so it lasts for decades.

How Waxed Canvas Works

Waxed canvas starts as tightly woven cotton. The fabric is impregnated with wax, which fills the tiny gaps between the fibers. Water beads up and rolls off instead of soaking in, and the waxed surface turns away wind and snags that would tear a lighter fabric.

Because the protection lives in the cotton itself rather than in a plastic membrane, waxed canvas is quiet, it moves like a broken-in work coat, and it can be repaired and refreshed instead of thrown away. Every crease, scuff and faded seam becomes part of the jacket's character. That patina is not wear and tear. It is the point.

The trade-off: wax wears thin where the jacket flexes and rubs. Every so often you put it back. Once you know how, it takes about an hour.

How to Clean a Waxed Canvas Jacket

  • Never machine wash or dry clean. Detergent, agitation and solvents strip the wax for good.
  • Let mud dry, then brush it off. A stiff, dry brush takes off most dirt without disturbing the wax.
  • Sponge with cold water only. Hot water melts and moves the wax. Skip the soap.
  • Hang to dry at room temperature. Keep it away from fireplaces, heaters and dryers.
  • Store it hanging, not folded. Keep it somewhere cool, and give it a little space from leather and upholstery after rewaxing.
  • Expect the patina. Lighter lines at creases and elbows are normal. Rewaxing will darken them again if you want.

How to Rewax a Waxed Jacket

Rewax when water stops beading up, or when you see dry, pale patches at the shoulders, elbows, cuffs and pocket edges. For a jacket you wear hard every day, that is often once a year. For a weekend jacket, it may be every few years. We sell Halley Stevensons Original Reproofing Wax for exactly this.

  1. Clean first. Brush off dirt and wipe the jacket down with clean, cold water. Let it dry completely.
  2. Warm the wax. Set the closed tin in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes until the wax softens.
  3. Work it in with a cotton cloth. Apply thin, even coats and rub into the weave. Hit the folds, creases, seams and pockets, where wear shows first.
  4. Even it out with gentle heat. A hair dryer on low helps the wax sink in and smooths streaks.
  5. Hang it overnight. Let it cure somewhere warm and away from other clothes. Wipe off any tacky excess the next day.
  6. Go thin. Two light coats beat one heavy coat. You can always add more.

Waxed Canvas FAQ

Is waxed canvas waterproof?

It is highly water-resistant. It sheds rain, drizzle and snow very well and blocks wind, but in a prolonged downpour water can eventually work through seams and thin spots. Keeping the wax topped up keeps it performing.

How often should you rewax a waxed jacket?

When water stops beading or you see pale, dry patches. That is often about once a year for a jacket worn hard daily, and less often for occasional wear.

Can you wash a waxed canvas jacket?

Not in a washing machine and never dry cleaned. Brush off dried dirt and sponge with cold water only. Soap and hot water strip the wax.

Why does my waxed jacket have light lines at the creases?

That is the wax wearing thin where the fabric flexes. It is normal and part of the patina. Rewax those spots if you want them darker and fully water-resistant again.

Is a waxed jacket warm?

The canvas itself blocks wind but does not insulate much. Warmth comes from the lining: the unlined Mesquite is a shell, the Blacktail has 100 g insulation and the Sharptail and Women's Barn Coat have 150 g HD wool.

What is RangeWax®?

RangeWax is Schaefer's line of waxed cotton canvas outerwear, including brush jackets, quilted jackets, a barn coat and vests, built for durability and weather protection.

Will a new waxed jacket rub off on furniture?

A new or freshly rewaxed jacket can leave a little wax behind. Give it a few days of wear and keep it off light upholstery and leather until it settles.
